[Law] International Protection Marking

06/08/2026

The term "International Protection Marking" (IEC 60529) might be unfamiliar to many, but terms like "waterproof rating" and "dustproof rating" are likely more recognizable. It also has another name: "Ingress Protection Rating." We will now explain this aspect.

This rating exists because electronic and precision products generally have protective capabilities. However, to help consumers better understand the protective capabilities of products in everyday life, this code was developed for user reference.

IP code composition

  • The basic code consists of two letters, IP, and two items: solid particle protection and liquid penetration protection. (Example: IP12)
  • Originally, mechanical collision protection was included in this code, but now an IK code has been set independently and is no longer included in the IP code.
  • Other protective capabilities can be optionally marked with specific letters depending on whether the product has this function.

The correct encoding composition is as shown on the right, for example: IP68DS.

Next, we will explain each encoding.

Solid particulate protection

This number represents the product casing's ability to protect internal components and prevent external objects from entering.

liquid penetration protection

This number represents the device's casing's ability to resist liquid penetration.

Other protections

The last part of the code consists of English letters, which, in addition to indicating the prevention of human or damage contact with the item, also indicate the protective information for the item or equipment.

Mechanical impact protection (discontinued)

The third digit in the original code was used to indicate the product's or equipment's ability to resist mechanical impact; however, this item has since been replaced by the IK code in the EN 62262 standard.

Summarize

When purchasing a precision product or equipment, carefully observe the information in the product manual or warranty card. Usually there will be an IP-related code. This will help you better understand the maintenance of the product and avoid environmental damage to the product, extend the service life of the product and preserve its value.
