Many people's understanding of electricity is limited to 110V, which is mostly used for household appliances, while 220V is generally used for factory instruments and other related equipment. However, few people know about the characteristics of these two voltages. Next, I will organize them and present them in a table.
The difference between 110V and 220V
The table above clearly shows that if you want safe household electricity, 110V is the better choice due to its low voltage. If you need to use high-power equipment, 220V is the primary choice. However, whether to use 110V or 220V depends on the country's electricity planning. As mentioned earlier, Taiwan's household electricity is set at 110V, and factories and other related electricity use is 220V. However, in mainland China, electricity is uniformly 220V. Therefore, when traveling abroad, be sure to understand the electricity regulations in advance to avoid improper use or damage to electrical appliances.
When talking about electricity, we will inevitably talk about plugs and sockets. Each country has its own style and there are many types, so we will not introduce each type in detail, but only introduce the types in Taiwan.
Types of plugs and sockets in Taiwan
- This type of socket is the most common household outlet. The longer prong of the two outlets is the neutral wire (no voltage), while the shorter prong is the live wire (110V).
- The advantages of a two-prong outlet are its affordability and ease of installation. However, since the outlet lacks a grounding wire, it is less safe.
- In addition to the two sockets, a three-hole outlet also has a semicircular socket. This semicircular socket serves as a grounding wire, preventing electric shock from electrical leaks.
- While a three-hole outlet has the advantage of providing a grounding wire, it also prevents electric shock from electrical leaks. However, it is more expensive and more difficult to install.
- A T-shaped socket has two rectangular jacks for the live wire, and a semicircular jack for the ground wire. T-shaped sockets are primarily used for air conditioners.
- When choosing a household socket, choose the appropriate one based on the type and power of the appliances you use. If you're using high-power appliances, choose a three-pin or T-shaped socket.
